Oxygen OS 5.0 based on Android Oreo

Christmas was yesterday and OnePlus found the perfect opportunity to give a big surprise to its users! Almost a month back, OnePlus started the Beta program for the OnePlus 5 with the first build of Android 8.0 Oreo. OnePlus promised they would deliver the Oreo update in early 2018, but surprisingly, the update has passed the development stage and is ready for final users.

OnePlus took to its forum to announce the big news recently and fans are all happy about it. The update is having a staged roll-out, so it will reach your device eventually. The update clocks in at about 1587mb and not only do you get the latest version, but also the latest December security patch. Here is the full changelog:

  • Updated to Android O (8.0)
  • Launcher
    • Optimizations for Shelf
    • Now you can upload your photo through Shot on OnePlus
  • Camera
    • New Camera UI design
    • Optimizations for photo quality
    • Added beauty effect for Portrait Mode
  • Gallery
    • Added “Places” tab for viewing photos on a map
  • Calculator
    • Added history feature
  • Clock
    • Added alarm calendar feature
  • System
    • Added Parallel Apps feature
    • New design for Quick Settings
    • New design for Lift up display
    • Added “Adaptive model” screen calibration
    • Optimizations for Wi-Fi
    • Optimizations for Battery Saver
    • Updated Android security patch to December

As with every OnePlus update, you can trigger the update for your device by using VPN if you are not into patience (like me). You can either connect it to Canada or Germany but as per reports, Germany builds are broken and can cause harm to your device. So I would recommend not using the Germany VPN.

I have personally used Canada VPN to update my device and to be honest, the phone feels much faster, but is missing some Oreo goodness like the new settings menu, and the new notification shade (OnePlus re-designed that too). It can be said that Nougat hasn’t fully left the device because of which OnePlus 3/3T owners have faced issues after updating to latest official oreo update which was also the reason that the update was pulled later on.

The Surprise!

The good news doesn’t end here. OnePlus Co-Founder ‘Carl Pei’ announced on his Twitter account, that the OnePlus 5T’s most loved feature called ‘Face Unlock’ will be coming to the OnePlus 5 soon due to popular demand. OnePlus 5 owners are stoked and now they won’t feel left out after the launch of the 5T.

OnePlus has once again proven that it always listens to the feedback provided by its users and acts accordingly, which is the best part of the company according to us. Let us know how guys feel about all the Christmas goodies OnePlus has gifted us.
