Rolling right along from one review to the next, it’s time to take a look at the Moment New Macro Lens ($89.99). I gave you the rundown on Moment’s Pixel 2 Photo Case a few days ago, and I told you I’d be back soon with a full review of each of the two lenses I got with it. Here I am with the first of two lens reviews, and it’s time to get up close and personal with this magnificent little macro monster.

What is macro photography, anyway?

Before we get started, I assume most of you are familiar with macro photography. For those who aren’t, macro is a style of photography which produces photographs of small items in a “larger than life” size. You can fill your frame with great amounts of detail, and the results can be quite fantastic. Especially once you get the hang of it.

When should you use a macro lens?

Having a macro lens handy is a great tool for taking awesome photos. But you may be wondering – when should you use a macro lens? Here are a few cases that are perfectly suitable for these types of shots:

(Remember, these are just examples. Get creative with it, and you’ll surprise yourself with how useful a macro lens can be.)

  • Flora/Fauna: See the petals of a flower in all their incredible detail.
  • Insects: Capture the tiniest of creatures with a super close-up.
  • Textures: Show off the intricate stitchings of fabric or clothing.
  • Arts and Crafts: Whether it’s your hobby or job, this lens is perfect for capturing craft details.
  • Jewelry: Capture the finest aspects of your jewelry with a stunning new perspective.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at the Moment New Macro Lens, shall we?

Packaging

Packaging

The Moment New Macro Lens comes in small, black cardboard packaging that bears the manufacturer’s logo, with a label that reads, “Long live the picture taker”. The label also distinguishes that it’s a 25mm macro lens (V2 of the lineup). The lens, a lens cap, a microfiber carrying pouch, and an insert card with instructions are all that’s in the box.

The lens is solidly-built and made of a sturdy metallic material. It’s about an inch thick – maybe slightly more – without the included (and removable) diffuser hood. With the hood, it’s about three inches thick, give or take a few centimeters. The lens cap is a really nice touch, as it keeps your lens safe and free of dust and debris when you’re not using it.

Installation

Moment New Macro Lens mounted on the Google Pixel 2

Slapping this lens on my Pixel 2 is surprisingly simple. There’s a white line on the side of the lens that lines up with a notch on the phone case. After aligning, you gently insert the lens into the case, give it a half-turn in the clockwise direction, and it locks into place. I wish it was this quick and easy to change lenses on my Sony A6500.

Performance

When I first put the Moment New Macro Lens on my Pixel 2, I was pretty disappointed. Everything was really blurry, and I couldn’t manage to get even a halfway decent shot. This was my fault, however, and not the fault of the lens.

You see, this is the first macro lens I’ve ever shot with – on either a smartphone or on an actual camera. I didn’t realize how close you have to be to get your shot in focus. Luckily, Moment has amazing customer support on Twitter, and they quickly got me on my way to taking some pretty lovely shots.

And they were absolutely correct. You’ve gotta get right up in there, but when you do, you’ll see everything come into focus. Taking the diffuser hood off leads to a bit of light flare in some situations, but it can also look pretty cool by giving your photos a bit of a surreal effect.

This is my favorite photo I’ve taken yet with the Moment New Macro Lens. Look at that bokeh!

Enough with my babbling. Let’s get to the star of this show – the bread and butter if you will. Here’s a gallery of shots I’ve taken with the Moment New Macro Lens. Try not to have your mind blow, mmkay?

Wrap-up and final rating

At $89.99 plus the $29.99 for the Pixel 2 case, you’re looking at about $120 to dive in here. If you’re even halfway serious about your mobile photography game and macro is a style that interests you, you can’t go wrong here.

Pros

  • Small and lightweight
  • Easy to install
  • Produces great images
  • Comes with microfiber carrying pouch

Cons

  • You have to get really close to your subject for it to come into focus. This could prove for difficult shooting if you’re taking photos of say, insects, or something like that. I personally haven’t tried any of these types of shots, because bugs aren’t my thing, but for the sake of finding something to bitch about, this is all I’ve got.

Where to buy the Moment New Macro Lens

You can pick this lens up, or any of the other lenses, cases, or other accessories Moment offers directly from their website. Again, the New Macro Lens runs $89.99 – the rest of their lenses are all similarly priced, too.

And, do yourself a favor and buy more than one lens so you have some options to work with!
