Gone are the days of Android Pay and Google Wallet. The search giant is ushering in the new year with a single, unified platform under the name Google Pay. The new service will encompass all the different ways to pay with Google into one place.
This news comes by way of an official announcement, penned by Google’s VP of Payment Product Management, Pali Bhat.
With Google Pay, it’ll be easier for you to use the payment information saved to your Google Account, so you can speed through checkout with peace of mind. Over the coming weeks, you’ll see Google Pay online, in-store, and across Google products, as well as when you’re paying friends
Say hello to Google Pay!
To be honest, it’s surprising that this is just now happening. Google Wallet has been on its way out for quite some time, and Android Pay has been on a steady rise. It only makes sense to combine everything into one project, and since Google is obviously a bigger name than Android – it is what it is.
Google Pay is already live in a few places, like Airbnb, Dice, Fandango, HungryHouse, and Instacart. There’s also a promotional page live with a few money-saving deals.
New app incoming?
It isn’t immediately clear when an app with the new Google Play branding will drop for Android devices, but it’s likely safe to assume one will in the near future. I’ll keep an eye out for it. We’ll have an APK file for your downloading pleasure once we get our hands on one to share.
For now, what do you think of Google Pay? Good move combining the services, or nah? I personally loved Android Pay – so did Rob – so it will be interesting to see how this plays out. Hit us in the comment thread with your thoughts.
