I don’t know if it’s just me, but something screwy is going on with Netflix and Chromecast lately. And it’s driving me crazy. I can’t get through even a 30-minute episode on any show without a sudden and unexpected disconnection.
It doesn’t matter how I initiate the casting session. My Pixel 2, my Google Home, any of the 3 tablets in my home, and even the fiancee’s iPhone. Anytime we’re watching a show, and without warning, it just cuts off.
At first, I thought there was no method to it all, but then I realized, it seems to happen when I press the power button on my Pixel 2 to turn off its display. And considering I do that pretty often, just out of habit, it becomes a huge pain in the ass, come time to Netflix and chill.
Take tonight, for instance. We’re sitting around, trying to watch some Cheers, and it keeps cutting out every 5-10 minutes. That’s when it hit me that I should write this post to see if it’s just me, or if anyone else is experiencing this bug.
So, I hop on the site, start typing this up and leave my phone on the charger. Low and behold, we made it through an entire episode without it happening again.
Of course, there’s the argument that I should be paying attention to the TV, not playing on my phone, but I shouldn’t be forced to do so with the threat of constantly saying, “Ok, Googe, play Cheers on the bedroom TV”.
This issue hasn’t always existed – it’s only been since getting the Pixel 2 that I’ve even noticed it. That has me wondering if it might be a bug that kills the casting session when I turn my phone display off.
Whatever the case, it’s annoying as all get out.
