Android 8.1 Developer Preview 2 is out now for the latest “Pure Google” devices, including the Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel C, Nexus 6P, and Nexus 5X. Just last month, we saw the first preview builds roll out with a final release said to come before the end of 2017. Here we are at the end of November, and as expected, the second preview build is now available for your flashing pleasure.
How to install Android 8.1 Developer Preview 2
If you have a device with an unlocked bootloader, you can grab the updated system images and flash them using ADB. They all come with build number OPP6.171019.012. If you don’t have an unlocked bootloader, the Android beta program is your only other option at this time.
I just checked my Pixel 2 and alas, the OTA isn’t available just yet. That’s not really surprising, however, as the system images usually hit a bit earlier than OTA updates. I’ll keep an eye on the update screen and update this post once the rollout hits my device so you know to check on yours. Stay tuned for that.
The most exciting thing here is that this update enables Pixel Visual Core. This is Google’s secret weapon in the already-stellar cameras on the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL that, up until now, wasn’t even enabled. Check out the Pixel Visual Core release notes for more details on that.
It’s also worth noting that Google is calling this the final developer preview. That means it looks like we’re still on track for a final release in December. Woohoo!
Have you already, or will you be flashing this update manually? Or will you wait for the OTA to drop sometime in the near future? Hit me in the comment threads and let me know what you’re thinking here, friends!
