“Hey Alexa, call me a cab, would you?” Wait, what? Yep. That’s right! Amazon’s Alexa AI is now capable of making calls and sending messages to phone numbers in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
It works on Echo devices (Echo, Echo Show, Echo Plus, Echo Dot, Echo Spot, but not on the Echo Tap seemingly) as well as through the Alexa app which was updated to add the function.
It’s also worth mentioning that Amazon flipped the switch on for Alexa-to-Alexa calling in the UK, Germany, and Austria, according to Android Police‘s Rita El Khoury.
Up until recently, I’ve always been a Google Home guy. But I got an Echo Dot a while back and have been using Alexa a bit more these days, and I’m starting to see where it has a few edges on Google Assistant. I don’t know enough to pass a final judgment at this time, but I will say Alexa has definitely piqued my interest.
